633 & 645 East Anderson Street

The next two buildings represent a vulnerable and underrepresented building type in Savannah, the humble worker’s cottage, or railroad cottage.  Built sometime between the 1880s and 1890s, these small vernacular structures were built for working class laborers, often utilizing scrap lumber, and were typically only two to four rooms. These two properties were saved by the HSF Revolving Fund; their location is in a vulnerable unprotected neighborhood with no historic designation.  There is nothing that would have prevented their demolition except for HSF’s protective easement placed on the buildings at the time of sale.  HSF saved these properties in 2020 and 2021.
